Laurie Lebowitz Learning to Look Fund

What is Learning to Look?
Learning to Look is an art history and art appreciation program which is presented to WDS students in grades K-5. Our Learning to Look program is chaired and taught by parent volunteers who are trained in the Learning to Look curriculum. Our curriculum is based on the Permanent Collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as the Museum of Modern Art, and typically includes five sessions over the course of the school year - all centered around a set time period; each session introduces students to a group of artists and designated paintings relevant to the period we are studying. Students are encouraged to explore the artist’s work by looking at the Elements of Art - color, line, shape, texture, light, and space. Students are also given the opportunity to create their own works of art inspired by the master paintings discussed in their lesson. Our students’ interpretive creations are part of a rotating art gallery that is displayed in the corridor off the Main Entrance to Wolfson - take a look next time you are on campus! At the end of the unit, students take a field trip to the MET (and occasionally the MOMA or the Neuberger Museum of Art, depending on curriculum) to view in person the artwork they studied all year long in class. There is nothing quite like viewing an artist’s masterpiece on display in real life!
Support the Arts at WDS
The Laurie Lebowitz Learning to Look Program fund was established in 2023, to raise awareness of this unique art appreciation program and to continue to keep the program and corresponding museum trips active and strong for many years to come. The fund was created in loving memory of Laurie Lebowitz, z"l. Laurie was a devoted parent volunteer at WDS for many years, and served as Chairperson of Learning to Look from 2006-2014. Laurie believed in the power of incorporating art education into the classroom. Laurie's passion and commitment to the Learning to Look program brought enrichment to students and parents alike at WDS.

We hope you will consider supporting art appreciation at WDS, through a gift to the fund, in memory of Laurie or in honor of a Learning to Look volunteer who had an impact on your child's appreciation for the arts.
